| 4-On 2-Off | 8h | 6 days | 3+ | 37 | Retail, logistics, security |
DuPont Schedule
The DuPont schedule is a 28-day rotation using 4 crews working 12-hour shifts. Each crew follows a pattern of 4 night shifts, 3 off, 3 day shifts, 1 off, 3 night shifts, 3 off, 4 day shifts, 7 off. The standout feature is the 7 consecutive days off every cycle, giving employees extended recovery time. Developed by the DuPont chemical company, this pattern is the gold standard in continuous manufacturing operations.
Panama (2-2-3) Schedule
The Panama schedule — also known as the Pitman schedule in some regions — rotates 4 crews over 28 days using 12-hour shifts. The pattern alternates: 2 days on, 2 off, 3 on, then 2 off, 2 on, 3 off. Every other weekend is a 3-day weekend, which employees consistently rate as the biggest benefit. This makes Panama the most popular 12-hour pattern in public safety and emergency services.
Continental Rotation
The Continental pattern uses 8-hour shifts (morning, afternoon, night) with fast rotation. Instead of spending an entire week on nights, employees work only 2-3 consecutive shifts of each type before rotating. Sleep research consistently shows that fast-rotating patterns cause less circadian disruption than slow rotations. The tradeoff is more shift handoffs per week, which increases communication overhead.
Pitman Schedule
The Pitman schedule is a 14-day fixed rotation using 12-hour shifts. Crews alternate between 2-on/3-off and 3-on/2-off sequences. Every other weekend is guaranteed off. The shorter 14-day cycle is simpler to administer than 28-day patterns and gives employees predictable days off. It is widely used in utility companies, power plants, and telecommunications.
4-On 2-Off Pattern
The simplest continuous rotation: work four shifts, take two days off, repeat. The 6-day cycle means days off naturally rotate through the week — employees get weekends off roughly every third cycle. With 8-hour shifts, this pattern averages about 37 hours per week, making it compliant with standard labor regulations without overtime concerns. It is the go-to pattern for retail chains, warehouse operations, and security companies.
How to Choose the Right Pattern
24/7 operations with 4+ crews: DuPont or Panama for 12-hour coverage, Continental for 8-hour coverage. Smaller teams (3 crews): 4-on-2-off provides continuous coverage with minimal complexity. Employee preference for extended breaks: DuPont (7-day break) or Panama (frequent 3-day weekends). Minimizing fatigue: Continental (shortest consecutive same-shift runs) or 4-on-2-off (shortest work runs). Simple administration: 4-on-2-off (6-day cycle) or Pitman (14-day cycle) over DuPont/Panama (28-day cycles).
